Your van conversion cost is best built line by line, from prices you have checked yourself. UK published estimates put a self-build at £5,000 to £15,000 on top of the van, according to the rental platform Camplify. Power and heating are the heaviest equipment lines, and the DVLA covers the cost of any inspection when you register the van as a motor caravan. The prices below were checked on 13 October 2026 at named UK retailers, so you can update them yourself.
1. List every line before you buy: insulation, electrics, heating, fridge, water, carpentry, registration.
2. Check today’s price at two retailers and note the date, because prices move quickly.
3. Keep a line for tools and a contingency for the unexpected.
What published sources say about van conversion cost
We found no official study of what a van conversion costs. The figures available come from industry blogs, and they describe estimates. Camplify’s guide to camperbuild cost, updated in June 2026, gives £5,000 to £15,000 for a DIY build and £15,000 to £40,000 or more for a professional one, both on top of the van itself.
Camplify also breaks out some of the bigger lines, and so does the specialist insurer Just Kampers in a guide by Jason Sims, updated in June 2026.
| Line | Camplify | Just Kampers |
|---|---|---|
| Electrics | £1,000 to £2,000 | £1,000 |
| Gas and heating | £1,000 to £1,600 | £1,000 to £1,500 |
| Windows and vents | £800 to £1,150 | £1,000 (windows) |
Just Kampers also puts insulation at £300 and a kitchen at £200 to £1,100. These are the authors’ estimates, useful as a starting point. Your own van conversion cost will depend on the kit you choose, and the fastest way to pin it down is to price that kit directly.
Van conversion cost for power and comfort
Here is an example basket built from UK retail prices checked on 13 October 2026. It does not represent a typical build: swap each line for the product you actually want.
| Item | Retailer | Price checked |
|---|---|---|
| Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 isolated DC-DC charger | Van Junkies | £247.99 |
| Autoterm Air 2D 2 kW diesel heater kit | West Wilts Campers | £625.00 inc. VAT |
| Dometic CRX-50 compressor fridge | Van Junkies (unavailable that day) | £625.00 |
| MaxxFan Deluxe 400 × 400 roof vent | Nomadic Leisure | £299.00 |
| Fogstar Drift 12 V 100 Ah lithium battery | Fogstar (sold out that day) | £279.99 |
| Mestic MSMO-200 solar panel | Camper Interiors | £175.95 |
| Example basket total | £2,252.93 |
Prices vary a lot between retailers. The same Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30 was listed at £169.99 at Nomadic Leisure, £247.99 at Van Junkies and £254.99 at Camper Interiors on the same day. The heater controller is often extra too: West Wilts Campers charged £110 for the PU-05, with professional fitting from £600 plus VAT. That spread is where your build cost is won or lost.
The basket leaves out cables, fuses, an inverter and heater ducting. Our campervan wiring diagram helps you list those parts before you price the electrics.
Registering your van as a motor caravan
In the UK, changing the body type to motor caravan goes through the DVLA. The government’s guidance on converting a vehicle into a motor caravan lists the external features expected: two or more windows on at least one side, a separate entrance door, motor caravan style graphics on both sides, an awning bar and a high-top roof. Inside, seats and a table, sleeping accommodation, cooking facilities and storage must be rigidly fixed.
The same guidance states that the DVLA will cover the cost of an inspection if one is needed, though it will not reimburse the cost of getting the vehicle there. Budget for the graphics, the awning bar and any extra window rather than for a fee. If you are converting a French-registered van, our guide to VASP registration in France covers the French process.
The van conversion costs people forget
Some costs never show up on a shopping list. Tools come first: a drill driver, a jigsaw, a track saw and a crimper for electrical lugs add up quickly if you are starting from nothing. Fixings follow, screws, rivets, adhesive and sealant, spread across dozens of small purchases.
Insulation consumables add to the price of the boards: tapes, vapour barrier and trims. Our comparison of cork and Armaflex insulation helps you price that line. Then there are mistakes: a panel cut wrong, a part that does not fit, a cable that turns out too thin. Keep a contingency line in your spreadsheet so the build does not stall halfway.
Insurance is a running cost rather than a build cost, but it belongs in the plan. Just Kampers quotes motor caravan cover from £225 a year, a figure from an insurer advertising its own product, so get several quotes once the conversion is registered.
Building your own van conversion cost sheet
Start with your list of lines in build order: insulation, electrics, heating, water, carpentry, finishing, registration. Our guide to van conversion step by step sets out that order. For each line, note the product you want, two prices from two retailers and the date you checked.
Add the lines up, then compare your total with the published estimates. A big gap usually reflects your choices, a bigger fridge, a more powerful heater or a lithium battery. What matters is that every line of your van conversion cost rests on a price you have seen yourself, dated and tied to a retailer.
Your van conversion cost by profile
| Profile | Where to put the money |
|---|---|
| Weekends, simple build | Insulation, bed, lighting, modest battery, basic roof vent |
| Regular trips | Lithium battery, DC-DC charger, solar panel, compressor fridge |
| Full-time and winter use | Diesel heater, careful insulation, ventilation, larger power system |
Set your van conversion cost from how you will really use the van, line by line, with dated prices. Spend first on what you cannot redo once the walls are closed, insulation and wiring, and leave the easy add-ons for later.
